» Die beschleunigte Wundheilung ist eine Anwendung, die für die NASA von besonderem Interesse war, da Wunden in der Schwerelosigkeit nur langsam heilen. Im Jahr 2009 katalogisierten Forscher der NASA 219 Verletzungen während des Fluges, vornehmlich Abschürfungen und Risswunden, die sich die Astronauten während Weltraum-Spaziergängen oder ihrer täglichen Arbeit zuzogen. Es ist wichtig, derartige Art von Verletzungen schnell zu heilen um eine volle Mobilität der Astronauten zu garantieren. In vitro-Studien an Mäusen und Ratten ergaben, dass die LED-Lichttherapie eine 140- bis 200-prozentige Zunahme der Fibroblasten (den Vorläufern von Kollagen, das für die Wundheilung entscheidend ist) sowie eine 155- bis 171-prozentige Zunahme des Wachstums menschlicher Epithelzellen bewirkte. Diese Zellen befinden sich in der Haut und in den Blutgefäßen und dienen dort als physische Barriere, um Infektionen durch Krankheitserreger zu verhindern
